Sri Amritsar-The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee will organise a special Gurmat Samagam at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on September 6, 2026, to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of prominent human rights activist Qaumi Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Sharing this information today at the commencement of a phase of the Miri Piri Khalsa March from Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Patiala, Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj said that the SGPC would begin Sri Akhand Path Sahib at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on September 4 in memory of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra. The bhog (concluding ceremony) marking its completion would be held on September 6, followed by a commemoration of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra.
He said that as the Miri Piri Khalsa March was being commenced today from the sacred place associated with the Ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadar Sahib, who made the supreme sacrifice to protect religious freedom and human rights, it was equally important to remember Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra on September 6. He described Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra as a defender of human rights who worked to establish the identities of the families of youths killed amid state repression in Punjab. He said that keeping this in view, the event was being organised at Sri Akal Takht Sahib this year in memory of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj appealed to all Sikh organisations and the sangat to participate in the event at Sri Akal Takht Sahib in large numbers.
Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj said it has been decided that a commemorative event in memory of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra will now be held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib every year on September 6.
He said efforts are also underway to identify land at Harike for the proposed Shaheedi Pattan Memorial, which will commemorate Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra and thousands of other martyrs of Punjab. He added that work on the memorial would begin soon.
