Punjab man shot dead in New York while delivering pizza; Indian mission assures assistance

New York, Aug 24 (IANS) After a man from Punjab was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in the United States while he was out delivering pizza, the Indian mission in New York expressed grief over the incident and assured all possible assistance to the family of the victim.

Gurdeep Singh, a 28-year-old native of Punjab's Kapurthala, residing in the United States, was shot dead while delivering a pizza in New York City on August 21 (local time). According to an NDTV report, Singh went to the US 13 years ago after taking a loan, hoping to earn a livelihood and secure a better future for his parents back in India.

According to local media reports, the attack was suspected to be the result of a robbery bid. The officials said that the suspect fled the scene after the shooting.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found a man shot in the chest. According to CBS News, paramedics rushed the victim to a hospital. However, doctors pronounced him dead.

No arrests have been made so far, according to the officials.

The Indian Consulate General in New York expressed sadness over the incident and said that the officials are in touch with the victim's family.

"We are deeply saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Mr Gurdeep Singh, an Indian national, who tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Brooklyn, New York, " the Indian Consulate General said in a post on X.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time. The Consulate is in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance, " it added.

Meanwhile, officials are scanning the CCTV footage from the neighbourhood to identify the suspect.

They said that an investigation into the case is underway.
