Chandigarh-Bharatiya Janata Party State President Kewal Singh Dhillon warmly welcomed the historic decision by the Union Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to extend the 'Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi' (PM-KISAN) scheme for the next five years. He stated that the Union Cabinet's approval of a financial allocation of ₹3.15 lakh crore to continue this scheme from the financial year 2026–27 to 2030–31 proves that the Modi government is genuinely pro-farmer.
Kewal Singh Dhillon explained that this decision will ensure that lakhs of farmers in Punjab, along with farmer families across the country, continue to receive financial assistance of ₹6, 000 every year in three equal installments directly into their bank accounts. This will enhance farmers' capacity to invest in agriculture, mitigate risks, and significantly boost the rural economy. He added that the scheme, launched in February 2019, is one of the country’s largest Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) initiatives, under which over ₹4.7 lakh crore has already been transferred to farmers' accounts through 23 installments so far.
He further emphasized that the Modi government remains committed to strengthening the financial well-being of Punjab’s farmers. The Central Government is ensuring seamless direct government procurement of paddy and wheat crops at record Minimum Support Prices (MSP), with payments being directly credited to the farmers' accounts.
Additionally, to lower the cost of farming, the Central Government provides annual subsidies worth lakhs of crores of rupees on urea and DAP fertilizers. Despite rising global fertilizer prices, the Modi government did not let the burden fall on farmers and ensured the availability of urea at affordable rates.
Kewal Singh Dhillon noted that the Modi government's primary objective is to increase farmers' income, make agriculture more sustainable, and accelerate the rural economy. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of Punjab's farmers for this exceptional step and farmer-friendly policies.
