Chandigarh-A discussion on events affecting the media industry due to the COVID-19 crisis was held between representatives of The Tribune Employees Union, National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Punjab and Chandigarh Journalists Union, Chandigarh Punjab Union of Journalists ( CPUJ), Indian Express Employees Union, UNI Employees Union and renowned senior Journalists of the region today. It was opined that the ongoing large scale retrenchments by many media organizations have serious consequences for the employees and the society at large.

It was felt that we need to launch a movement against such actions by the managements of such media houses. It was also felt that we need to take up the issue with the government at the central and state level to intervene in the matter to safeguard the livelihood of media persons.

It was further felt that the government be asked to provide some kind of relief or assistance to media houses by way of a financial package or reduction / waiver of taxes / duties / etc, especially those organizations which have not retrenched employees in these difficult times.

We encourage all media employees / unions and those associated with the media to join hands to protect the livelihood of employees. A small gathering, with due precautions and in accordance with government guidelines on COVID-19, has been planned for Monday, 29 June 2020, at the Sector 17 Plaza at 11.00 AM. You are all requested to express solidarity with those who have been adversely affected.
