Chandigarh-President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Reorganised), Giani Harpreet Singh, has strongly objected to the new recruitment system introduced by the Central Government and the Chandigarh Administration for posts related to health services in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. He said that ignoring Punjab’s historical, administrative and constitutional rights in government jobs and services in Chandigarh is an injustice to Punjab.
He said that if, under the new system, posts in the Health Department are being allocated in the ratio of 40% to Chandigarh (UT), 30% to Haryana and 30% to Punjab, then this is a step that undermines Punjab’s rights and its historical relationship with Chandigarh.
Giani Harpreet Singh said that Chandigarh is not merely an administrative Union Territory but is also a highly sensitive issue connected with the reorganisation of Punjab. Therefore, before taking any major policy decision concerning Chandigarh, the Central Government should take into consideration Punjab’s rights and the agreements made in the past.
He said that any attempt to continuously reduce employment opportunities for the youth of Punjab would not be tolerated. Punjab has already been raising its position for a long time regarding its rights over its capital and Chandigarh, but its concerns have repeatedly been ignored.
Giani Harpreet Singh demanded that the Chandigarh Health Services Rules, 2026 be reviewed again with regard to the recruitment rights associated with Punjab. He further demanded that, before finalising any new arrangement affecting Punjab’s interests, the Punjab Government and representatives of Punjab should be consulted.
He also demanded that any step weakening Punjab’s historical and administrative rights in Chandigarh be stopped immediately. The complete official details of the new recruitment arrangement should be made public so that the people of Punjab can know how many posts and what rights remain available to them.
Giani Harpreet Singh said:
“No new arrangement in Chandigarh can be accepted at the cost of Punjab’s rights. To safeguard Punjab’s rights, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Reorganised) will raise its voice on every constitutional and democratic platform. I appeal to the Central Government to understand the sentiments of the people of Punjab, reconsider the matter immediately and ensure justice for Punjab.”
