Chandigarh-President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, today joined the ongoing ‘Panjab University Bachao Morcha’ campaign being led by students at Panjab University, Chandigarh. He announced full support for the protest and assured active participation of the SGPC in the public gathering scheduled for November 10.

Advocate Dhami stated that Panjab University, Chandigarh, is a vital part of Punjab’s heritage which has played a significant role in the development of Punjabi language and culture. He said that one of the key features of this university has been its democratic traditions, where the Senate and Syndicate are elected from different sections of society through a transparent electoral process.

He alleged that the government, through hidden measures, is attempting to end these democratic traditions and bring the university entirely under its control — an act which he termed as injustice to Punjab. He asserted that the SGPC will continue to represent and safeguard Punjab’s rights and interests on this issue, and will extend full cooperation at every level of the struggle.

The SGPC President further said that the Committee will not only participate extensively in the November 10 gathering, but will also assist in the necessary arrangements. “This is an issue concerning the rights of Punjab, and it is the duty of every Punjabi and every organization to stand with this struggle, ” he emphasized.

Advocate Dhami reminded that the SGPC, in its recent General House meeting, had already passed a resolution condemning the government’s unjust actions and demanding an immediate halt to such moves. He said that student organizations are courageously leading this struggle against injustice, and the SGPC fully supports and will continue to support them.

He appealed to the people of Punjab and political parties to come forward to protect the legacy of Panjab University, Chandigarh, and to stand in solidarity with the students’ movement.

On this occasion, SGPC Executive Member Bibi Harjinder Kaur, Members Ajmer Singh Khera, Charanjit Singh Kalewal, Secretary Engineer Sukhminder Singh, Joint Secretary Lakhbir Singh, Akali leader Sandeep Singh Sikri, and Sukhwinder Singh, Manager of Gurdwara Bagh Shaheedan, Chandigarh, were also present.
